I'm of the firm belief that if you make a game using the assets that come with the program, that game should be free (in my case I'm going to make one with vanilla assets to learn the system, most likely won't leave my circle of friends, and will be free) but if I make a game that actually uses mostly original assets, I MIGHT sell it, depending on how the game itself turned out. The engine and program are perfectly fine, it's what the user makes WITH it that can be the problem. How many asset flip Unity games are on steam again? How many asset mashups? I can go visit Jim Sterling's youtube channel and find more of them than I've seen (personally) RPG maker cookie cutter games. Also, I'd like to point out that the "I'm sick of the cookie-cutter RPG Maker games on steam" argument isn't exclusive.
